Willow Lantern Workshop with Karima Ellis

Karima Ellis, from England, has been making willow lanterns with communities for several years. She makes willow structures using willow, then covers them with wet strength tissue paper, which, when lit by a small candle inside, creates a glowing lantern.

Some structures may take the form of an animal, a bird, a boat or car, a sun or moon, or, for the Nordic festival she may suggest Nordic forms. They will be fastened to a stick and carried in the parade that will be held on the evening of the Nordic Festival, June 19th.

The workshops to make these lanterns will be held during the week of June 8 - 12th at the Schoolhouse in McDonald.s Corners. There will be a charge of $5.00 for the materials but no charge for the instruction as this is funded by Canada Council. Adults, teenagers and children with parents are welcome to attend the workshop. The lanterns will be paraded and displayed at the festival and then may be taken home by their creators.

All materials for the lanterns will be provided, but please bring garden pruners (to cut the willow) scissors, pencil, ruler. Please make registrations for the workshop by phoning Mona Stopford 278 0291 or Ankaret Dean 278 1203.or the Schoolhouse (leave a message on the machine) 278 0388.
